Report: Tillerson Replacement Sends Shockwaves Throughout DC

Categories: Politics

As reports of discord between President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s mount, uncertainty is growing about the former ExxonMobil’s CEO continued role in the Trump administration, and talk about Tillerson’s potential replacement has Washington buzzing.

According to the news website Axios, CIA Director Mike Pompeo is one of the top names being floated by “Trump advisers and allies” to step into the role of the nation’s top diplomat.

There’s nothing official yet, of course, but there has been plenty of fuel for the fires of speculation about Tillerson’s future.

This summer, as tensions grew inside the White House, Tillerson reportedly considered resigning amid policy disputes and clashes with President Trump, according to NBC and other news outlets.

The fallout also seemed to have stemmed from a meeting on July 20, in which Tillerson may have referred to President Trump as a “moron.”

Though he reportedly stuck around at the behest of Vice President Mike Pence, the scandal has not yet simmered down.

On Wednesday, according to NBC, Tillerson tried to squash the talks, stating that he had, “never considered leaving this post,” but that situation led inevitably to speculation about a possible replacement should this distraction continue.

According to Axios, Trump and Pompeo already have a good rapport, the transition could be an easy one, if it came to it.

Pompeo has several qualifications that would make this a good move if Tillerson goes. As Axios pointed out, Pompeo already has a seat at the table in the White House Situation Room, so the learning curve for the secretary of state post wouldn’t necessarily be a steep one.

As a six-year veteran of the House of Representatives for a Kansas district, he is familiar with Capitol Hill and regularly advises the president on matters of immigration and Congress’ inner workings, Axios reported.

“Pompeo personally delivers the President’s Daily Brief, making him one of the few people Trump spends a great deal of time with on a daily basis,” Axios reported, adding that Pompeo is “one of the few in the administration who knows how to convey tough news to the president, and how to push back without turning DJT off.”

Though another change in the staffing at the White House would bring inevitably bad media coverage, Axios reported sources who said Tillerson and Trump’s relationship has been too badly damaged, citing the fact that Tillerson refused to deny insulting the president.

It’s still a toss-up at this point, but Pompeo might already have one foot in the door while Tillerson has one foot out of it. It’s anybody’s guess as to who makes the first move.
