A London woman has spoken out about the injuries she sustained when she rebuffed a friend’s romantic advances.
Dovile Krivickaite, a Lithuanian who immigrated to Britain in 2012, sustained severe burns to 24 percent of her body when she was brutally set afire by a man she considered a friend.
According to the U.K. Daily Mail, Kravickaite had been adjusting well to her new home and had made several friends. One of those friends, Mohammed Kosar, misinterpreted their friendship and made “unwanted moves on her” that Krivickaite kindly but firmly rebuffed.
“When I initially turned him down he laughed it off. He seemed to take it well,” she said. “Then he asked me several more times after that. Each time I told him firmly ‘no.’ I just didn’t fancy him and couldn’t imagine us being together in that way.”
Kravickaite believed Kosar — who Mad World News described as a Muslim immigrant from Somalia, although the source of that information was unclear — held no ill will against her. So on Oct. 19, 2013, when he offered to give her a ride to meet up with friends at a local pub, she agreed without hesitation.
Instead of driving to the pub, however, Kosar took her to a residential area and suggested they go on a walk. He proceeded to splash her with gasoline and light her on fire.
Kosar walked away as Kravickaite was engulfed in flames, screaming for help. As she rolled on the ground to put out the flames, a bystander rushed to her aid and doused the flames with cold water. Emergency personnel arrived and transported her to the local hospital.
Kravickaite has made a full recovery, though she sustained permanent scarring. Kosar was arrested, convicted of attempted murder, and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Clearly this man had ulterior motives from the beginning and never intended to merely have a friendship with her. When it was obvious that she was not willing to cooperate, he barbarically “punished” her.
Kosar evidently believed that it was completely permissible to simply burn this woman alive because he did not get what he wanted, though Western children learn from the earliest stages of life that this type of behavior is unacceptable.
Thank goodness the British justice system threw the book at him. Hopefully the message it sent was clear.
