Muhammad Ali once described his fighting style as “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” While that certainly applied to the Louisville Lip, it’s also an apt description of the AC-130 Stinger II.
A four-engined military workhorse, the Lockheed AC-130 gunship is a heavily-armed close-air-support aircraft. In this video, posted on YouTube in November of 2012, we get to see just what this beast of an aircraft can do.
The mission took place in an undisclosed location, as members of the Air Force’s 27th Special Operations Wing were hunting down terrorists. The only thing that could be easily seen is that they’re above a forest.
After a brief silence, about forty seconds into the video, one of the pilots announced, “We are clear to fire.”
“Fire five and six!” another one of the crew members could be heard saying.
As soon as the ordnance hit, terrorists could be seen running and trying to get away. However, playing hide-and-seek with 66 tons of military muscle usually doesn’t turn out that well, as these extremists were about to discover for themselves.
“They’re around the other side of the terrain, stand by,” a voice could be heard saying as the plane circled the area.
However, the aircraft’s crew located the bad guys again and managed to knock a few more of them out.
“Good shots,” one of the crew members said.
As more and more explosives fall, it turns out that terrorists weren’t the only casualties. Some of them were arboreal, as well.
“A tree fell!” one of the crew members explained. “Timber!”
(Warning: graphic displays of awesomeness ahead and/or terrorists being killed ahead. Liberal granola-eater discretion is advised.)
God bless our military might. Not only can it wipe out ignorant, violent terrorists of all stripes, it can also fell some trees while it’s at it.
