The former girlfriend of alleged New York City bombing suspect Ahmed Khan Rahami said in an interview that the 28-year-old harbored a deep hostility toward America, a possible motive in Saturday’s blasts.
According to Fox News, an interview with the mother of Rahami’s daughter, identified only as “Maria” (her real name has been withheld for obvious reasons), indicated that the terror suspect “was a bad father who disliked America, hated gays and took long trips to his homeland of Afghanistan.”
“He would speak often of Western culture and how it was different back home,” she said. “How there weren’t homosexuals in Afghanistan.”
“He seemed standoffish to American culture, but I never thought he would cross the line,” she added.
Rahami is considered the main suspect in possibly-linked bombings in both Seaside Park, New Jersey, and the Chelsea section of Manhattan. His fingerprint was found on another unexploded bomb in New York City. Yet another unexploded device was found in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Maria said that in addition to hatred of America in general and of gay people, he also displayed a hatred of the U.S. military.
“One time, he was watching TV with my daughter, and a woman in a (military) uniform came on and he told (their daughter), ‘That’s the bad person,'” she said.
One of the terror suspect’s targets was a 5-kilometer race held by the Marines in Seaside Park.
“I never thought he would do something like this,” she said, crying. “I think he was brainwashed.”
Maria added that Rahami never paid child support.

We don’t know what role Rahami’s Afghan background or religious beliefs played in the blast, or whether he committed the crime at all. However, Maria painted an unflattering picture of a suspect consumed by his hatred for America and its military.
We cannot pacify those who have disdain for this country or its freedoms by political correctness or being more liberal. We can do so only by reinforcing American values and patriotism. Without that, all is lost.
