Super Bowl QB Shocks Sports World With Religious Aspirations Following Career
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles has plans for his future after the NFL, and they aren’t limited to sports: They include passion and faith.
“I want to be a pastor in a high school,” Foles said in a pre-Super Bowl interview, as reported by The Associated Press.
“It’s on my heart. I took a leap of faith last year and signed up to take classes at seminary. I wanted to continue to learn and challenge my faith. It’s a challenge because you are writing papers that are biblically correct. You want to impact people’s hearts,” he said.
He certainly picked a wonderful way to do that.
Foles is passionate about helping students find their way in the world, and he hopes his experiences will inspire and encourage them.
He said that in high school, students have so much thrown at them.
“So much temptation in this world, so much going on with social media and the internet that you want to talk to them and address it and share all the weaknesses I have because I’ve fallen many times,” said the man who would become Super Bowl MVP.
“It’s something I want to do. I can’t play football forever. I’ve been blessed with an amazing platform and it’s just a door God has opened, but I still have a lot of school left and a long journey,” he added.
Foles is not the only member of the Eagles to be open about his faith. Fellow quarterback Carson Wentz — the Eagles spectacular started and league MVP candidate until a career-ending injury in December — has also expressed his faith, and many players reportedly spend time together praying, studying the Bible and sharing devotionals, the AP reported.
The Eagles drafted Foles in 2012. He thought about retiring when the Eagles traded him to the St. Louis Rams in 2014, but decided not to because he said he loved the game. He played for the Rams for one year, before playing for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2016 season.
In March of last year, Foles returned to the Eagles under a two-year contract to back up Wentz. After Wentz tore his ACL, Foles became the Eagles’ starting quarterback.
And the rest, they say, is history.
“It took a lot more faith to come back and play than it would’ve to go in the other direction,” Foles said about the decision.
“Either way would’ve been fine. Either way, I would’ve trusted in God. I would’ve done something else and glorified God in that instance,” he said.
It is awesome to hear Foles speak so openly about his faith, and it is even better to know that he wants to become a pastor and help teenagers.
At a time when there is so much hatred toward Christians, it is refreshing to hear someone stand strong for the faith.
We need more of this kind of leadership.
