Single Coyote Shows Up in Liberal Utopia, Authorities Shut Everything Down

Share

In most of America, a wild coyote would be no big deal. They may be a nuisance, but they’re rarely a danger to life or limb.

In the liberal utopia of New York City, however, a single coyote managed to shut down the entire employee parking lot of one of the biggest transportation hubs in the nation.

According to WPIX-TV, the employee lot at LaGuardia Airport was shut down on Jan. 17 by U.S. Department of Agriculture officials as they hunted for a coyote that had been spotted in the area.

As a former resident of the New York area, I can tell you this much: Nobody wants to be at LaGuardia. Really, the coyote would have just left on his own if he had any choice, the same way anyone traveling through LaGuardia would leave by their own volition if they had a better way to connect to St. Louis through Buffalo.

But alas, USDA officials feel the need to get rid of this specimen of Canis latrans.

According to WPIX, the coyote is the sole survivor of a family of coyotes living near the airport that had been otherwise euthanized.

He’s now known to animal rights activists as “Dumbo.”

Even though authorities promised to send him to a wildlife preserve if he was captured, Dumbo still remains on the lam. Animal rights activists and Dumbo supporters want him to stay that way.

“He’s not dangerous first of all. There’s nothing on record, there’s no video, that shows the animal is aggressive to anybody. It’s not like he’s going into the lot and attacking and barking, none of that,” LaGuardia shuttle bus driver Rose Ortega, one of Dumbo’s most vocal defenders, told WPIX Jan. 17.

Do you think authorities overreacted to this coyote?

USDA officials refused to budge.

“Protecting the public and employees at LaGuardia Airport is the Port Authority’s highest priority and the agency is concerned by reports that a coyote has returned to an area at LaGuardia Airport where employees park their vehicles,” spokeswoman Cheryl Ann Albiez told the New York Daily News.

“We are monitoring the whereabouts of the coyote, warning individuals not to feed or approach the animal and developing a course of action to address the situation.”

It’s kind of rare when the animal rights activists are actually the sane ones, but such is the dizzying liberal funhouse mirror Bill de Blasio’s New York that little that happens within its confines would surprise us.

In spite of LaGuardia’s location in the borough of Queens, it’s not exactly located near major population centers, nor has the coyote been spotted mauling civilians at the Southwest advance ticket counter as he tries to book a flight to Phoenix.

I can understand putting in place procedures to ensure the public remains safe, and I can also understand I’m not fully privy to the inner workings of the USDA.

That said, shutting down the employee lot — which, at LaGuardia, isn’t exactly small — to search for an animal seems a bit extreme to us.

Oh, and by the way, they didn’t manage to catch Dumbo. And I, personally, retain a certain amount of satisfaction at this. Much like Dr. Richard Kimble in “The Fugitive” or Kowalski in “Vanishing Point,” you root for Dumbo to keep on escaping the authorities at every turn.

Here’s to you, Dumbo, the last true coyote hero of LaGuardia; the canine who realized that freedom to roam around America’s worst airport means freedom of the soul. The question isn’t whether he’s going to be stopped, but whether the USDA’s bureaucrats will stop and come to their senses for once.
