Russia’s been pretty cavalier in harassing our military of late, often sending their jets by to buzz ships at sea and intercepting planes in the air. Now, reports say they’re doing that to our civilian ships as well.
In a stunning act of bravado, Russian ships and helicopters harassed a cargo ship carrying equipment for military exercises in the Baltic that ended last week, Defense News reported.
The incident involved the U.S.-flagged merchant vessel the Green Ridge in late May. As the ship steamed toward Lithuania, it faced harassment from Russian helicopters and at least one naval vessel.

While it was a civilian ship — meaning it was manned by non-military personnel — the fact that it was carrying equipment for Exercise Saber Strike 2017 likely made it a target of the latest showdown between Russia and America. Still, the fact that the Russians are going after American citizens is a dangerous new step in the confrontation between the two superpowers.
U.S. Transportation Command issued a statement acknowledging the incident.
“We are aware of an alleged situation on May 25, involving a contracted, U.S.-flagged vessel, and Russian military ship and aircraft,” the statement read. “The commercial ship was bound for Lithuania, and was contracted by the U.S. Department of Defense to transport equipment for an upcoming planned exercise.”
