Absolutely Perfect Replacement Eyeing Franken's Seat

Share

Former Rep. Michele Bachmann may be considering a run for former Senator Al Franken’s seat in Minnesota.

In an interview with evangelist Jim Bakker on Dec. 27, Bachmann said she had been praying about the decision since Franken announced he would leave the Senate.

Franken officially resigned Tuesday.

“I’ve had people contact me and urge me to run for that Senate seat,” she told Bakker, adding that she did not know if God was calling her to run.

“But there’s also a price you pay. And the price is bigger than ever because the swamp is so toxic,” she continued.

There is no arguing that the swamp is as toxic as ever. For that reason, it would be a big win for someone like Bachmann, with uncompromising stands on conservative issues, to take a seat in the Senate.

The former congresswoman said the only reason she might run would be to take Christian and conservative principles into the Senate where she could advocate for them.

While Bachmann said she could handle the demands of the Senate, she said the political climate, along with the financial aspects of running for a Senate seat, raised concerns.

Bachmann was elected to Congress in 2007 to represent Minnesota’s 6th District, and she served until 2015.

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, a Democrat, will replace Franken in the Senate. Smith plans to run for the seat in a special election in November.

The Minnesota Star-Tribune reported that the only other candidate to announce a run is state Republican Sen. Karin Housley.

If the former Republican presidential candidate decided to run, she would need to begin campaigning very soon.

That being said, there are plenty of conservatives who would be happy to see Bachmann throw her hat in the ring.

Bachmann would a perfect replacement for Franken. She could flip the seat and prove to be a thorn in the side of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell with her straightforward and conservative style.
