Two Alabama parents were forced to endure a living nightmare after they walked into their 14-year-old daughter’s bedroom to find that she had committed suicide by hanging.
After looking for signs as to what may have caused her tragic death, parents Jennifer and Ronnie Sellers discovered that their daughter, Sydney, had been living a dark and dangerous life.
On Sydney’s phone were numerous messages exchanged with older men, all being sexual in nature. Even worse, the messages all contained conversations involving one common and disturbing theme — erotic asphyxiation.
Sydney’s mother, Jennifer, said of her daughter’s involvement, “She was 14 and hormonal. But I don’t think she understood these were grown men and they were grooming her.”
Not only did they learn that Sydney was being targeted by perverted men who were much older than she, but according to her schoolmates, she was bullied severely in school and had been engaging in a form of self-abuse known as “cutting” for at least five months.
“Apparently my daughter was being bullied at school, pretty severely from what I’ve been told by a couple of kids,” Jennifer said. “We had no idea.”
Ronnie Sellers was involved in the law enforcement field and Jennifer worked as a children’s attorney, but neither had any idea what kind of torture their daughter Sydney was suffering.
They’ve decided to use her death as a teachable moment to inform other parents of the utmost importance to make sure that their children are being monitored and asked about their activities to make sure nothing is going on behind the scenes that could lead to what happened to Sydney.
“Go out of your way to know your kids. If you’re a parent, I don’t care how angry your kids gets with you, I don’t care how private they think their lives should be, if they’re under your roof, there’s a limit to their privacy,” Jennifer warned (H/T IJ Review).
