Watch: Oscar Crowd's Sick Response to Gary Oldman Thanking America
The crowd at the Oscars, being the typical bedazzled liberal mess of very flawed humanity that award show usually draws, applauded plenty of statements on Sunday night.
When host Jimmy Kimmel clumsily bashed Donald Trump, Hollywood applauded. When two legal immigrants who came to the United States to study at two of our most expensive colleges took to the stage and told the audience that they were dreamers too, Hollywood applauded. When rap star Common told the NRA they were “not God’s way” while performing on stage with a woman responsible for the deaths of 3.8 million unborn children, Hollywood applauded.
Do you know what they didn’t applaud, however? When actor Gary Oldman thanked the country of America for giving him opportunities.
As expected, he beat out Timothée Chalamet of “Call Me By Your Name,” Daniel Day-Lewis of “Phantom Thread,” Daniel Kaluuya of “Get Out” and Denzel Washington of Roman J. Israel, Esq. to take the award. It was the first Best Actor award for the veteran actor, who’s starred in everything from “Sid and Nancy” to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.
As The Daily Caller noted, Oldman got applause from the crowd when he thanked his mother and the make-up team that turned him into Winston Churchill.
However, things were different when the British-born Oldman thanked his adopted country, America.
“I’ve lived in America for the longest time, and I am deeply grateful to her for the loves and the friendships I have made and the many wonderful gifts it has given me,” Oldman told the audience.
“My home. My livelihood. My family and now Oscar.”
And… crickets.

This stands in marked contrast to the aforementioned speech from actress Lupita Nyong’o and actor Kumail Nanjiani, the aforementioned “dreamers” who used their time on stage to ostensibly appropriate the mantle of dreamers, which garnered them plenty of applause.
Yet, when Oldman tried to thank America for what it had done for him as an immigrant, there was nothing more than dead silence.
