A military coup in Turkey seems to have been defused by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, but not before scores of people had been killed.
According to Fox News, the coup was started by officials from the Air Force, military police and armored ground units in Turkey. Estimates Saturday morning of how many had been killed varied, ranging from 161 from Fox News to 265 from The New York Times.
Appearing on Fox News as news of the coup was breaking, “The O’Reilly Factor” host Bill O’Reilly said that Turkey was just another example of how American weakness was spreading all over the world.
“The picture for the American citizen who doesn’t seem to care what happens inside Turkey is that the whole region in the Middle East is now in an uproar,” O’Reilly said. “The whole region. And this is what happens when the United States steps back and tries to become one nation of many and doesn’t lead.
“Now, it would be interesting to find out if the CIA had a heads up on this, which they should have had,” O’Reilly continued. “(If) U.S. intelligence knew that this was coming down — I don’t know if we’ll be able to find that out or not, I hope we will be — but the importance to Americans is that the Middle East is absolute chaos, anything can happen.
“And you know, we’re in a war against radical Islam,” he concluded, “and this kind of stuff just makes it more difficult to fight that war.”
It’s worth pointing out that when President George W. Bush left office in January of 2009, everyone was saying the Middle East was in chaos because we’d just gotten Iraq under control after several years of insurgency.
In almost eight years of Obama, Iraq has fallen back out of control, Egypt’s government was toppled and replaced by the Muslim Brotherhood, then replaced by a military coup; Libya actually managed to find a form of government worse than that administered by Col. Gadhafi; Afghanistan has lapsed back into chaos; Syria is beyond repair; and the contagion of the Islamic State group is killing hundreds of people in the West.
If what President Bush presided over was chaos, what Obama has driven us to has to be the apocalypse.
