Megyn Kelly’s new Sunday night program on NBC is about to premiere after the journalist took a nearly five-month hiatus following her departure from Fox News, and if all goes as planned, she has quite a major interview lined up for that first show.
Appearing on the “Today” show from St. Petersburg, Russia, where helped moderate the International Economic Forum, Kelly announced that she will sit down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, to be aired on Sunday.
“So we just got word this morning that President Putin has agreed to sit with yours truly for a one-on-one interview at the conclusion of tomorrow’s forum,” Kelly said. “And I’ll get the chance to ask him directly about these allegations of meddling and the prospect of our two countries working together … and beyond.”

“So that ought to be fun,” Kelly joked, adding a moment later, “I’m sure we’ll make no news.”

The interview could be testy, given the tone of remarks between Kelly and Putin during the economic forum itself, where Kelly was acting as a moderator.

Kelly attempted to grill Putin about the allegations of Russian meddling in the November election in front of the audience, but the Russian president was firing right back, according to Euronews.
“The problem is not us, the problem is in U.S. internal politics,” Putin said. “Trump’s campaign staff, Trump’s team was more effective during the election campaign. Sometimes I myself thought he was exaggerating, it’s true. But it turned out that he was right. He found a way to reach those groups in the population, those groups of voters he was betting on. And they came out and voted for him.”
There had been some rumors of a potential interview with President Donald Trump for Kelly’s first show, but she shot that down in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating, “For this show right now, we’re focused on different things.”
“Listen, I wouldn’t say ‘no’ to a sit-down with President Trump, but it’s not necessarily how I want to kick it off,” she added. “Especially since we’re going to be kicking it off with an interview with Vladimir Putin. How many of those big egos can you fit into one show?”
Kelly’s new program on NBC begins Sunday at 7 p.m. ET, and will feature as guests — aside from Putin — sports journalist Erin Andrews and best-selling author J.D. Vance, writer of “Hillbilly Elegy.” In September, Kelly will join the crew of “Today” to help co-host the 9 a.m. closing hour of the weekday morning show.
