A Houston man was shot in the neck Wednesday by his neighbor after an apparent heated disagreement about animal cruelty.
The 20-year-old victim was reportedly seen by the neighbor beating a dog that had been barking all night, and when the neighbor, in his 60s, confronted the younger man about the beating, things escalated.
Some sort of threat or physical confrontation took place during the argument, the mother of the victim told KPRC, causing the older neighbor to retrieve his shotgun.
“My son attacked him in some form or fashion because they were talking about the dog,” the mother explained. “My son ran into the house. The guy that shot him ran into another area, got the shotgun and shot through my back window and shot my son in the neck.”
She confirmed that her son was taken to the hospital for treatment, but she did not reveal his name.
While the shooting seemed a bit drastic, some have expressed satisfaction with what happened.
In fact, family friend Willis Garrett said he hoped the incident might teach the victim a needed lesson.
“I hope it’s a good wake-up call for him because he was having problems with his mom all of the time and going through some things with her,” Garrett said. “I just hope it’ll be a wake-up call for him.”
The elder man will likely not be charged in the incident, as the official investigation has found it was an act of self-defense, according to police.

While we don’t know exactly what was said between the two neighbors, the shooting victim will hopefully think twice before he beats his dog or threatens someone again.
