Little Boy Takes a Knee During Pledge of Allegiance… Mom Goes Bonkers

Categories: Culture

The fervor over American flag protests seems to be reaching hysterical levels everywhere — and it looks like elementary school classrooms aren’t off limits.

Earlier this week, a young boy decided to act out during the Pledge of Allegiance at a Florida school after seeing players do the same thing before an NFL game.

That by itself is not terribly surprising. After all, children often emulate behaviors without understanding what they mean. However, the boy’s mother handled the situation in such an overwrought way that it immediately became clear where the student’s anti-American attitude came from.

According to ABC News, the 6-year-old boy took a knee during the Pledge of Allegiance at Wiregrass Elementary School in Pasco County, Florida.

The boy’s teacher sent a text message to the mother, simply informing her that the “protest” had taken place.

“I just wanted to let you know that this morning when it was time to do the Pledge of Allegiance [your son] went down on one knee,” the message stated.

“I know where he had seen it but I did tell him that in the classroom we are learning what it means to be a good citizen we’re learning about respecting the United States of America and our country symbols and showing loyalty and patriotism and that we stand for the Pledge of Allegiance,” the teacher continued.

“I know its a sensitive issue but I wanted to make you aware. Thanks.”

That message seemed straightforward enough, and it doesn’t appear that the young student was disciplined by the school in any way.

Despite the even-handed approach to the incident, however, the boy’s mother quickly went ballistic and brought race into the forefront.

“We are no longer going be silenced, our voices will be heard and our little black boys that sit in classrooms today, not just my son but every other child that looks like him, they are not going to be silenced,” Eugenia McDowell declared to ABC.

There’s no indication that the boy’s race had anything to do with the teacher’s text message, which most likely would have been sent if a child of any color had acted out during the pledge.

“It immediately caused him to think again about ever expressing himself in a way that would be different than how other people are expressing themselves,” the boy’s mother told the media.

The outraged mother is also demanding that the teacher apologize for daring to inform her about the boy’s actions.

“I wanted an apology to my son in the same manner that she called him out for kneeling. I also wanted to know if she would be remorseful,” McDowell said.

School policy and even the law seems to be on the side of the teacher, however.

“Our policy — and state law, for that matter — requires that a parent submit a request in writing that their student be exempted from participating in the pledge,” Pasco County School District spokeswoman Linda Cobbe explained.

No such letter was ever sent by the parent.

The sad part of the story is that the young boy is most likely caught in the middle of a fight that is being pushed by his mother.

It’s also unfortunate and frustrating that accusations of vague racism are being injected into an incident that has nothing to do with color.

When did asking a student to respect the classroom and the American flag become racist? When did sending a reasonable message to a mother become about ethnicity?

It looks like Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous dream of a world where people are judged by character, not color, has been turned completely upside down. Boys can apparently now act out in class without any consequences, and a teacher who mentions it to a parent risks getting labeled a racist if the student’s skin happens to be dark.

Respecting the flag and the culture that we all share should be a universal value for every American. Increasingly, it looks like certain parents are sending a much more divisive message.
