An ex-con in Edmonton, Canada, decided to go on a shopping spree at Walmart but had no intention of paying for the items he wanted. As he made his way to the parking lot, two Walmart loss prevention officers pursued the thief, and the ensuing fight escalated quickly.
A viral YouTube video uploaded last September showed the two officers in a struggle with then-26-year-old Jeremy Garnhum, an ex-convict who had done time for an arson charge.
As the officers continued their fight to detain the suspect, the situation took a deadly turn when Garnhum brandished a utility knife and began slashing at them.
The two officers then battered Garnhum into the ground while making sure the knife was out of his hands.
“The knife is clear, the knife is clear,” one of the officers yelled.
Blood could be seen pouring from the ex-con’s head after he was slammed into the pavement.
A bystander can be seen on her cellphone calling the Edmonton police, who later arrived and took the ex-con into custody.
What would have been routine shoplifting charge for Garnhum turned into a lot more than that. Edmonton authorities charged him with assault with a weapon, assault to overcome arrest, theft under $5,000, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and two charges of breach of recognizance.
No charges were filed against the officers, according to the Edmonton Sun.
However, Walmart has since changed their policy to disallow pursuing low-value thefts outside of the store. Getting stabbed obviously isn’t worth the possibility of capturing someone with a couple of T-shirts stuffed into his pockets.
