Defeated: Gutiérrez Cries Uncle, Prepared to Give in on Trump's Wall

Share

As you no doubt know by now, our federal government has been shut down due to a number of stumbling blocks in passing a continuing resolution in the Senate. One of said stumbling blocks is DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. You may better know the recipients of this Obama amnesty fiat as the “DREAMers,” which is quite the happy colloquialism for illegal immigrants.

And, if there’s anyone who’s been the face of the DREAMers (and illegal immigration in general), it’s Democrat Illinois Rep. Luis Gutiérrez.

Gutiérrez, who’s emerged as one of the most vocal (and least sane) critics of the Trump administration, has done everything short of getting himself arrested to keep illegal immigration going as strong as possible. Actually, no, wait — he’s gotten himself arrested for it, too. Three times since August, actually.

So, when Gutiérrez is actually willing to give in to President Trump’s biggest policy initiative on illegal immigration — the border wall — you can bet Democrats are listening.

When asked by CNN Saturday whether he would be willing to support building the wall, Gutiérrez responded in the affirmative.

“Sure. Look, I think it would be a monumental waste of taxpayers’ money to build a monument to stupidity,” Gutiérrez said.

“But if that’s what it’s going to take to take 800,000 young men and women and give them a chance to live freely and openly in America, then I’ll roll up my sleeves. I’ll go down there with bricks and mortar and begin the wall.”

Gutiérrez also said that “we will dirty our hands in order for the DREAMers to have a clean future in America.”

Do you think the wall will be built?

The Illinois representative’s remarks were perhaps the first sign from the Democrat Party’s left wing that Democrats know Trump’s wall is going to be built, whether they like it or not.

It’s also a sign that they realize they’re not going to get a deal on immigration the way they always used to — getting the Republicans to agree to their reforms with promises (always unfulfilled) that border security would be addressed later.

Indeed, as The Hill notes, one of the reasons for the shutdown was the Democrats’ demand that DACA language be attached to a continuing resolution to keep the government open. When President Donald Trump rescinded DACA and set a grace period so that Congress could act, such tactics weren’t necessarily what he had in mind:

As for Gutiérrez’s proposal to go down to the border and build the wall, I’m all for it. Considering he’s been a factually- hallenged nuisance and demagogue who once called the White House Chief of Staff former Gen. John Kelly “a disgrace to the uniform,” I think it’s good to see him offering to do productive work for once. Even though he thinks it’s “stupidity” that won’t save us any money, facts seem to demonstrate otherwise.

Alas, it’s unlikely we’ll see him doing any construction work down at the southern border. However, it’s yet another win for the Trump administration — and a definite sign that opposition to the border wall is quickly crumbling.
