What was intended to be a routine traffic stop turned out to be much more for a police officer in Cape Town, South Africa. In fact, dash cam video of the incident has many calling the officer more than brave.
Officer Nizaam Alexander instructed a driver to pull over for driving in a restricted lane on the city’s N2 motorway. As he approached the driver’s window, a man wearing a grey hoodie walked by.
The man then disappeared from the camera’s view — only to reappear behind the officer.
In a shocking display, the man pulled out a handgun and attempted to shoot Alexander, but his gun jammed. However, that didn’t stop him from approaching Alexander and demanding his gun.
When the officer refused to hand over his weapon, the man shot him at point-blank range.
Alexander was protected by a bulletproof vest and, while he was momentarily stunned, he never stopped doing his duty. He took cover behind the front of the car and radioed for help, then began to pursue the suspect on foot when he fled.
Unable to capture the suspect, Alexander returned to the car and completed the business of issuing the driver a citation before being taken to the hospital.
The undated video was uploaded to Liveleak sometime last year and it earned Alexander the City of Cape Town’s Departmental Traffic Officer of the Year 2015, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
The City of Cape Town Traffic Services said: “Even after traffic officer Nizaam Alexander was shot at point blank range he continued to perform his duties. His conduct exemplifies the professionalism and dedication to duty embodied by our Traffic Services.”
It was not indicated if police ever found this shooter, but we certainly hope they did before he shot anyone else.
There is no doubt this officer displayed the kind of professionalism we come to expect from those who put their lives on the line daily to serve and protect.
