California Citizen Who Immigrated Legally Destroys Sanctuary State in Under 1 Minute

Share

Sanctuary cities are a pretty common thing in the People’s Republic of California. Heck, it’s essentially a sanctuary state, thanks to a state law that precludes local authorities from working with federal agents.

However, some locales are fighting back — including Escondido, California. According to Fox News, Escondido became the fourth city in the state (and the first in San Diego County) to announce it was going to attempt to nullify the state law.

“This is the right thing to do,” Mayor Sam Abed said Wednesday after the city council voted to go against the state law.

“I was elected mayor to uphold the Constitution and to keep our community safe. I am committed to do that, and that’s what the council did today.”

California’s attorney general, Xavier Becerra, has been vehemently against cities opting out of the law. However, at the Escondido city council meeting where the resolution was passed, one fiery legal immigrant spoke out against the law and against the shielding of illegal immigrants in general.

Now, it’s going viral.

“I speak to you as an immigrant myself,” the man, who was wearing a familiar MAGA cap, began. “I came to this country 45 years ago with me and my mother, OK?

“Forty-five years ago, we were not offered sanctuary. We were not offered an easier softer way.

“We were told ‘You have to be an American citizen and here’s what you have to do,'” he continued. “And we did it.”

Do you think California's sanctuary state law should be nullified?

The man — one of 70 to speak at the at the meeting, according to the Los Angeles Times — talked of “now (having) a piece of paper hanging on my wall called a naturalization certificate that says ‘I am a proud, United States, American citizen.’

“And if I can do it, every single person who’s a ‘Dreamer’ in this room can do it,” he said, using air quotes around Dreamer.

It’s likely the man’s speech didn’t necessarily influence the vote; the city council voted by a 4-1 margin to oppose the state law.

In fact, City Attorney Michael McGuinness noted that this move doesn’t mean the city is suing the state — simply filing a brief in support of the Trump administration’s lawsuit against the sanctuary law.

However, it’s certainly stirring to watch — and has unsurprisingly gone viral on Facebook, with over 36,000 shares and 1.7 million views in eight hours on The Daily Caller’s account alone.
