Score one for cultural relativism: A bride who couldn’t pay the dowry for her wedding had her nose cut off by the groom.
(WARNING: A graphic image of the damage is shown below, which might be disturbing for some.)
Rathore, 27, had been demanding a dowry of $750 since their wedding five years ago. Since her father couldn’t give it, Rathore decided to cut his wife’s nose off.
“‘He was constantly demanding 50,000 (rupees),” Kamlesh Rathore said. “I repeatedly told him that my father is very poor and he cannot afford such an amount but he did not listen and used to threaten me that he’ll chop off my nose.
“He has beaten me for years,” she added. “He’s used belts, slippers, sticks and has always tortured me.”
Since he didn’t get that amount, here’s what she got, per the agreement: Her nose was chopped off.
Rathore claimed that her in-laws held her down Wednesday while her husband hacked off her nose.
“They all grabbed me tightly. I could not move,” she said. “And then out of nowhere I saw a knife and he chopped off my nose.”
Rathore was rushed by a nearby health center, but her nose wasn’t able to be reattached — her husband had taken it and disposed of it.
“My sister’s husband has been very cruel. He has given her a terrible life and now this,” said Kamlesh Rathore’s older brother Sachin. “He even took her nose and gifted it to the gods at his temple. He’s a sick man.”
And yet, we want to preserve the primacy of other cultures. Really?
