The manager of a limousine company who fired an employee because she refused to have sex with him has now cost his company hundreds of thousands of dollars in a recent lawsuit brought by the employee.
Raymond Townsend, former manager at US Limousine in Long Island, N.Y., was found liable for sexual harassment against former employee Geralyn Ganci. Townsend had sent her inappropriate texts for over a year before he terminated her in 2009.
Ganci, 32, sat near the desk of Townsend’s wife, but that apparently didn’t prevent him from propositioning Ganci on a regular basis.
Allegedly, in 2009, Townsend cornered Ganci in a bathroom one day when his wife was out of the office. He put his hands up her shirt and demanded that she have sex with him.
When she refused, he fired her.
The original sexual harassment complaint stated that Townsend would call Ganci “at all hours of the day and night, during work and after the work day to convey disgusting, sexually suggestive, erotic and vile messages of a sexual nature.”
As if messages of Townsend’s “lap” weren’t vile enough, he also sent one, included in court documents, in which Townsend said he “had to pull over to the side of the road and masturbate” while thinking about her.
The clincher for this case was one message in which Townsend reportedly told Ganci that she had been fired because she “refused to have sex with the general manager,” court papers stated.
This message was used as evidence in the civil rights suit that Ganci brought against both Townsend and employer, US Limousine. Both were found liable for more than $700,000 in damages and fees (H/T Opposing Views).
Ganci originally sued for $5 million, but while the jury found Townsend liable for sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment it did not consider him guilty of intentionally inflicting emotional distress.
Townsend is reportedly no longer employed by US Limousine — big shock there.
No word on whether his wife is still speaking to him.
