Bush spokesman Jim McGrath announced that the former president, 92, was in intensive care at Houston Methodist hospital on Saturday due to complications developing from pneumonia. Bush was reported to be responding well to treatment.
In further sad news, Barbara Bush also was admitted to the same hospital Wednesday morning after “experiencing fatigue and coughing,” McGrath announced.
George H.W. Bush, who served a single term as President from 1989 to 1993, has battled numerous health issues in the past few years. After Parkinson’s Disease left him unable to walk, he was hospitalized for shortness of breath in 2014 and broke the C2 vertebra in his neck during a fall at home in 2015.
Although he is a public figure, Bush remains a very private citizen, rarely making public remarks. On Jan. 10, he sent a letter to President-elect Donald Trump, apologizing in advance for not attending the upcoming inauguration.
Making it clear that neither age nor infirmity have weakened his sense of humor, he wrote, “Barbara and I are so sorry we can’t be there for your inauguration on Jan. 20. My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under. Same for Barbara. So I guess we’re stuck in Texas.”
Always a class act, Bush added: “But we will be with you and the country in spirit. I want you to know that I wish you the very best as you begin this incredible journey of leading our great country. If I can ever be of help, please let me know.”
During the presidential election, even after their son Jeb Bush had left the race, both Bushes had expressed their opposition to Trump, according to Independent Journal Review, which made Bush’s comments all the more gracious.
Bush is the only living former president not expected to be in attendance at Trump’s inauguration on Friday, according to the New York Daily News.
Age and infirmity wait for us all. Please pray that for both President and Mrs. Bush, this illness is just a minor bump on life’s journey and that they will both be home and well very soon.
