During the 1950s, thefts were at an all-time high and people were desperately trying to find new ways to protect their belongings from thieves.
In 1959, British Pathé reported that banks and financial firms were using “anti-bandit bags” to transport large quantities of cash and were considering developing a bag that would literally smoke out thieves.
The idea behind the bag was simple: When banks needed to carry large amounts of cash, they placed a small container of chemical vapor in the bottom of their bags. Before they walked into public, they would attach a cord around their wrist that was connected to the container of vapor.

If they were attacked or mugged, they would throw the “anti-bandit bag” down, and the cord would release the chemical vapor and smoke out the bandits.
The idea behind the quirky bag is to scare the criminals away and serve as a deterrent should they try to rob someone again.
In the demonstration video from 1959, as soon as the man drops the bag and the cord is pulled to release the vapor, bandits can be seen immediately dropping the bag and running away.

The bag took it one step further, which Democrats today would probably argue is too harsh and discriminatory. The smoke from the vapor contained a red dye, so when it was released into the air, it would stain the money as well as the clothes of the bandits.
Oddly, the bag began to disappear in 1963, when it didn’t gain a lot of attention in the media.
As strange as this bag looks, it actually served as a good deterrent years ago and would have been a liberal’s nightmare.
Liberals would oppose this bag not because it would protect a person and their belongings, but rather because it would be unfair for a criminal to be covered in red dye and publicly shamed if they were caught trying to steal.
