While some Americans kneel during the national anthem, students at a high school in Kentucky are standing up for the proper treatment of the American flag.

At South Oldham High School, three juniors have created a student-led organization appropriately called “Friends of the Flag.”

Cameron Carroll, Cara McWhirk and Jack Koontz formed the club last year and gather at the end of the school day to lower and fold the flag respectfully.

The three students have transformed a simple act of duty into a very special patriotic event.

The students, all of whom come from military families, say that the care and keeping of the flag means more than just removing a piece of fabric from a pole.

“There’s a lot of hidden meaning behind the things that you do,” Koontz told WDRB, “and folding it the proper way is one of those things.”

For Carroll, the idea to start “Friends of the Flag” came after she witnessed “the flag being lowered, and the janitor just kind of put the flag under his arm.”

As a member of a military family, Carroll said that she “kind of couldn’t stand for that.”

Do these three give you hope for the future of our country?

It was then that Carroll wrote a letter to the school principal and organized her friends to help.

Koontz and McWhirk quickly joined in on the patriotic event and for McWhirk, it’s “really about respect.”

Despite the fact that the three dedicated students graduate in only two years, they have already begun to look to the future.

The students are now speaking to some underclassmen about taking over their flag-handling duties.

Leaving a legacy for other students is a point of pride for Carroll.

“It makes me feel like I’m doing something good for my community, and it makes me happy,” she said.

In a country so divided, these three prove that there is still hope for the youngest of Americans.

There are some NFL players — and probably some members of Congress — who could learn a thing or two from these young Americans.
