A homeless woman in West Covina, California, entered a Subway restaurant early Sunday morning, ordered a cup of water, then promptly locked herself in the bathroom for ten minutes.
Other customers and employees could hear the woman screaming in pain in the bathroom, but she refused to answer them as to what was wrong and refused their offers of assistance, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
After 10 minutes, the woman emerged from the bathroom with her clothes drenched in blood and beat a hasty retreat out of the restaurant, ignoring and avoiding an employee that tried to stop her.
The entire incident was captured on surveillance camera, and the footage shows her both entering the restaurant and bathroom and leaving with a trail of blood following behind her.
To the shock and dismay of the employees, they quickly discovered what had caused the woman to scream and bleed so much in the bathroom — an abandoned newborn baby found partially submerged in the toilet.
Paramedics arrived just a few short minutes after 911 was called, and the baby was swiftly rushed to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center, where it was initially listed in “critical condition,” but was later reportedly “doing well.”
Police also arrived on the scene in a short matter of time and followed the trail of blood left by the homeless woman to find her some 500 yards away about 20 minutes later.
Mary Grace Trinidad, 38, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and child abandonment. She was also wanted on a previous drug charge.
Trinidad was transported to the same hospital as her baby for pregnancy-related issues, but she won’t be going anywhere else for awhile, as her bail was set at $2 million.
Law enforcement and government officials have now released the surveillance video footage and 911 call recording in the hopes of informing more people about the state’s Safely Surrendered Baby Law, which allows mothers to give up their newborn babies within 72 hours, no questions asked, rather than abandon or kill them.
What this woman did is terrible, but at least she did it in a restaurant staffed with caring employees who did everything they could to save the newborn baby abandoned in their restroom.
