A North Carolina woman thought she would teach her husband a lesson about gambling and wasting money on the lottery by buying a ticket, expecting to lose.
Glenda Blackwell, 57, bought a $10 Carolina Millions scratch-off ticket Saturday after her husband, Buddy, asked her to buy two Powerball tickets, according to WLOS.
But in an unexpected turn of events, she ended up being the one who received a lesson about the lottery — and a $1 million prize to go along with it.

“I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch-off to show him they didn’t hit,” Blackwell said. “Sometimes I get aggravated with him, so I tell him, ‘You’re just wasting your money.’”
Instead of losing $10, however, the Leicester resident hit the jackpot, winning the $1 million prize — though she opted for the lump sum of $415,503 after taxes instead of 20 yearly payments of $50,000 because she wasn’t sure she would live long enough to collect it all.
“I had to eat my words, but they were worth eating,” she said. “So I was very happy.”

“Happy” may be an understatement, as Blackwell explained that for the first time in her life money would not be an issue.
“We’ve struggled a lot, so now we can buy our own home and our own land. It’ll be paid for and I don’t have to worry about that no more,” she said. “So, that’s what I plan to do with some of the money and the other part I plan to help my daughter and to put money up for my two granddaughters for college.”
The couple said they won’t be scratching many lottery tickets in the future, but something tells me Blackwell’s husband won’t let her forget about this “lesson” anytime soon.
