In an interview with ABC’s David Muir that aired on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he would be signing an order barring refugees from Syria and other countries presenting significant terrorist threats from entering the U.S.
The president also said he would be instituting safe zones in Syria to try to ease the burden felt by residents of the war-torn nation.
“I’m going to be the president of a safe country,” Trump said. “We have enough problems. Now, I’ll absolutely do safe zones Syria for the people. I think that Europe has made a tremendous mistake by allowing these millions of people to go into Germany and various other countries.”

Asked if it was a “Muslim ban,” Trump responded, “No, it’s not the Muslim ban, but it’s countries that have tremendous terror.”
“Our country has enough problems without allowing people to come in who, in many cases or in some cases, are looking to do tremendous destruction,” he continued, adding, “You’ll be very thrilled” at the list of countries facing restrictions.
When Muir asked about countries that might not be on the list — including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia — Trump said Muir would have to wait for the executive action.

“You’re going to see,” Trump said. “We’re going to have extreme vetting in all cases. And I mean extreme. And we’re not letting people in if we think there’s even a little chance of some problems.
“We are excluding certain countries, but for other countries we’re going to have extreme vetting. It’s going to be very hard to come in,” he continued. “I don’t want terror in this country.”

According to Fox News, the order is expected to impose a 30-day ban on visa entries from seven countries — Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Libya — with entry denied to persons who already have visas. All refugees from Syria would be barred until vetting processes can be put in place, with a 120-day ban on refugees from the other six countries.

The plan, expected to be announced Friday, would reduce refugee admissions by 50 percent.
