Whenever there is a tragedy like a mass shooting or terrorist attack, far too often too much attention is paid to the perpetrators of the violence. There are almost always stories of bravery and heroism that get lost in the mix and go untold.
So it is with the recent massacre at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, where innocent victims and police officers all risked their lives in their efforts to thwart the shooters and end their bloody wrath.
One law enforcement officer in particular has garnered some notice due to the calmness and bravery he exhibited in shepherding out scores of frightened survivors huddled in the hallways of the building.
Apparently waiting for his fellow officers to give him an “all clear” signal before sending the nervous group of mostly women down the hallways and toward an elevator leading to an exit, the officer did his best to ease their worries.
“Try to relax. Everyone try to relax. I’ll take a bullet before you do; that’s for damn sure,” the unidentified officer proclaimed.
The group of survivors quickly shuffled down a couple of halls and around a couple of corners, finally coming to a stop around a bank of elevators, where another officer carrying a shotgun seemingly provided overwatch for them.
These frightened and disarmed survivors didn’t know what to do and feared that they would be killed by the shooters wreaking havoc in their building, but this courageous cop put their fears to rest with his bold pronouncement that he would protect them from harm by placing himself between them and the gunmen.
