On Friday, tens of thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest the very existence of Israel, a state that Iran doesn’t even recognize.
These Qods Day rallies have been held on the last Friday of Ramadan since 1979. Muslims in the region particularly resent the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem, a central holy city for three separate religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
These rallies have seen the burning of flags and coffins, brandishing of weapons, and renewing of threats. And guess who’s threatened right alongside them?
That would be correct — us.
As Israel’s ally, we are openly targeted by a government President Barack Obama insists we do business with.
“Down with the U.S.A.,” was chanted for all to hear, according to the U.K. Daily Mail. This was not an Iran-exclusive event, either. Shi’ite rebels in Iraq, Yemen, and Pakistan all have their chants, as well.
Gen. Hossein Salami, deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, lashed out as well, proving that this wasn’t just the machinations of some sort of rabble. While he was at it, he took a swing at the Kurdish separatists along their western and northwestern borders.
“I warn … officials in northern Iraq to fulfill their commitments,” he said. “We will decisively destroy any place that is the origin of threats against our ruling system, and we will be unbound by any cautions.”
I may be the only one, but I am not in favor of dealing with any country that even speaks like that.
