While speaking with reporters about four shoplifters caught on surveillance footage stealing from his store, Florida manager Lenin Ubiera-Cruz spotted one of those very same shoplifters only a few feet away, trying to exit a nearby shop.
“Just give me one second … this is the guy that stole the other day,” the distracted Family Foods Supermarket manager then said to the reporter before fearlessly setting off in pursuit of the bandit.
But rather than just confront the thief, later identified as Lawrence Ratcliff, manager Lenin Ubiera-Cruz decided then and there to use his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills to take him down, mixed martial arts style.
MMA.tv explained that the frustrated store manager “calmly took Ratcliff’s back, put his hooks in and wrapped him in a rear-naked choke.”
Basically, Ubiera-Cruz took Ratcliff down, and he did so in a manner so spectacular that it would have made many an MMA champ proud.
The manager himself might have been arrested for that, but luckily for him, he had CCTV footage that proved that Ratcliff was indeed a thief — one who had twice stolen products such as meat, beef, beer and eggs from the store.
So instead the authorities arrested Ratcliff on charges of petty theft and tossed him into jail, where he rightfully belonged. He was later sentenced to five days in jail and fined $273.
Moreover, Ratcliff was not the first thief to be taken down courtesy Ubiera-Cruz’s impressive fighting skills. He was in fact the third.
The manager reportedly put the first suspect in a full nelson, whereas he did his best to restrain the second one, who was armed with a knife and even cut Ubiera-Cruz on the arm.
“No matter what, we want to catch them,” the store manager said in regard to his heroic actions.
“No matter what.”
