In just one of a series of racially charged cases to emerge over the past couple of weeks, it appears that the the shooting of Philando Castile in St. Paul, Minnesota, might not have been as unprovoked as it initially appeared.
Although his girlfriend, Diamond “Lavish” Reynolds, maintains that the shooting was without provocation, police have since released reports showing the incident in a very different light.
The officer who fired, Jerinomo Yanez reportedly warned Reynolds, “Keep your hands where I can see them,” then later said, “I told him not to reach for it, I told him to get his hands off of it.”
One photo appeared to show Castile sitting with a handgun sitting in his lap.
That image seems to be the butt of a handgun. These images, provided by the Conservative Treehouse, constituted pretty damning evidence against Castile if, indeed, that is a handgun. It certainly seems to resemble the gun recovered by police at the scene, and Castile’s family recently released a copy of the letter accompanying the issuance of his handgun carry permit.
Even more condemnatory was the motivation behind the filming, according to Reynold’s own mother. Newsmax’s Dennis Michael Lynch shows her answering a huge question: How, in the face of all the violence, did she immediately think to record the events?
According to Lavish’s mother, Dafina Doty, it wasn’t out of a sense of recording history for posterity: “Diamond is a narcissistic Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat junkie.”
