There are some awfully stupid, selfish and neglectful people in this world, and their stupidity and neglectfulness can sometimes result in significant harm, even death, for innocent individuals.
Such was the case recently in the Katlehong township in Johannesburg, South Africa, when it was discovered one morning that a 26-year-old new mother had returned home from a night of heavy drinking and partying to find that the 3-month-old infant she had left home alone had been eaten alive by giant rats, according to the Africa News Network.
The community was utterly beside itself and extremely angry at the horrifying death of the little baby girl, whose twin brother had actually been brought along with the mother for the all-night binge-drinking session.
The U.K. Daily Mail reported that one of the woman’s neighbors entered the run-down shack in the morning and was absolutely horrified by what she saw.
“The baby could only have died a painful death. The infant’s tongue, eyes and fingers had all been eaten,” the neighbor revealed. “Besides the missing body parts, the remains of her body had bites and wounds all over that were inflicted by the sharp teeth of the rats.”
“This woman must rot in jail,” she added. “She does not deserve to be a mother.”
Noluthando Mtshali, daughter of the woman’s landlady, who couldn’t bring herself to look at what had happened to the little baby, stated that the mother was well known for her excessive partying.
“She has been a tenant since the beginning of the year and her twins were both in hospital last week but we do not know why they had been taken to hospital,” explained Mtshali.
Witnesses said it was not the first time she had left the twins on their own but it was the first time she had left only one child.
“She came back in the early hours of the morning with a new boyfriend and they tried to break into the shack, since she had lost the key, and they found the baby girl dead,” she added. “They were claiming that the child was burnt.”
Mama Sesi Mtshali, the landlady, said: “We have lots of rats in the area. She leaves the children alone all night long and they cry themselves to sleep. She would not say she left the baby alone.”
Indeed, giant rats are not at all uncommon in the region, and can grow to be the size of small dogs. This also is reportedly not the first time rats have killed and eaten small children.
According to The U.K. Sun, the mother was arrested, and custody of the surviving twin was given to the baby’s father and his new girlfriend. The twin brother, ironically named Lucky, was reportedly in good shape other than appearing somewhat malnourished.
As for the neglectful mother, she was placed under arrest by the Katlehong police, according to Capt. Mega Ndobe, who said, “I can confirm the little girl died after being eaten by rats.”
“The mother has been arrested and is facing charges of child negligence, and the case will be heard in court next year,” Ndobe added.
Hopefully this horrible woman will be held to account for her selfish actions that resulted in a horrific death for her infant child.
