When Barack Obama cannot bypass either Congress or the U.S. Constitution, there’s one place that’s his go-to for extra-constitutional action: the United Nations.
Obama administration officials plan to attend the Aug. 24 conference of signatories to the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty in Mexico City, in spite of the fact that the United States is not a member of the ATT.
While Secretary of State John Kerry signed the treaty in September of 2013, Congress never ratified it, meaning it isn’t operative. Apparently, though, that won’t stop Obama from pretending that it is.

The ATT is nominally for the expressed purpose of stopping the trade in arms across borders; like most convoluted U.N. power grabs, it’s significantly more than that. And, if Obama decides to implement it in spite of Congress and the Second Amendment, it could subjugate our gun rights to the United Nations’ anti-gun agenda.
For any gun-smuggling treaty to be enforceable, it would first need to have some sort of registry. In the case of the ATT, this registry would necessarily be an international one, accessible to foreign governments who were signatories to the treaty.
The National Rifle Association warned that the ATT would force “importing countries to provide information to an exporting country regarding arms transfers, including ‘end use or end user documentation’ for a ‘minimum of ten years.’”

An “end-user database” is a polite and jargon-y way of saying that there would be some form of internationally-held gun control registry that any nation could check up on.
The Gun Owners of America (GOA) sounded the alarm about this, saying that the Mexico City conference was merely an effort on the administration’s part “to bring back the framework for a global gun control regime.” (H/T Breitbart)
It’s hard to disagree. After all, if the Obama administration really didn’t plan on implementing this insane, unconstitutional plan, why would they send their representatives to Mexico City? And it isn’t like they’ve been known to respect Congress or the Constitution on issues like illegal immigration or property rights.
The GOA urges Americans concerned about the Mexico City conference and its effect on their Second Amendment rights to call their lawmakers in Washington and urge them to stand against the ATT. We couldn’t agree more.
