One of the more prominent figures responsible for advocating that the United Kingdom leave the European Union made some interesting statements this week regarding GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump — and they are sure to leave the real estate mogul smiling.
Nigel Farage said he would attend the Republican National Convention taking place in Cleveland next week, USA Today reported.
Farage said Britain’s decision to leave the EU held some important lessons for America.

“Having criticized President Obama for getting involved in British politics, I am not about to endorse anybody,” Farage said Tuesday.
“But I do know a lot of people in the Republican Party, and I’ll be interested to hear what Donald Trump has to say in his big speech,” he added.
The former leader of Britain’s right-wing U.K. Independence Party said he would attend the convention as an observer. He did not say who invited him to the convention, but clarified that it was not Trump.

President Barack Obama faced intense criticism regarding his remarks in April about Brexit, claiming Britain might find itself at the “back of the queue” for a trade deal with the US if it decided to leave the EU.
Farage said staying in the EU was counterproductive.
“In fact, staying inside the EU would be profoundly damaging for the U.S.-U.K. relationship because as the EU develops more and more foreign policy, it reduces the U.K.’s ability to independently make decisions and continue to be America’s closest ally through NATO and everything else,” he said.
In contrast, Trump was the only presidential candidate to voice support for the ‘Leave’ campaign, and had echoed Farage’s comments when he claimed the people of Britain needed to make a choice that helped them retain their independence as a sovereign nation.

Open borders was a key issue in the campaign to leave the EU, and Trump has made it no secret where he stands on the matter of open borders.
While Farage declined to endorse anyone for president, it certainly looks like Trump might have at least one ally across the pond.
