They always say you shouldn’t bring a knife to a gunfight. By the same token, you shouldn’t bring a tinpot group of terrorist savages with a medieval outlook on Islam to a fight with an actual trained military.
A group of fighters, allegedly with the Islamic State group, found this out the hard way when they decided to shoot at a Russian-made Syrian fighter jet with machine guns. One of the fighters made a recording of what happened, and it wasn’t pretty (for the fighters on the ground).
The video began with a MiG-21 being recorded off in the distance. The group of fighters can be heard yelling over the machine gun fire directed at the jet.
However, machine guns aren’t particularly good at taking down warplanes, nor is screaming “Allahu Akbar!” as these fighters were doing.
The MiG-21 turned and drew closer, and ordnance dropped from the wing.
The cameraman tried to run but is knocked down by the force of the explosion.
The video is dated May 11, 2014, but it was uploaded to YouTube in December of 2015.
I’d like to point something out here. The MiG-21 is an antiquated fighter jet by any standard, having first been produced in the Soviet Union back in 1959. It saw effective use during the Vietnam War, but in the 40-odd years since that conflict, it’s easily been surpassed by almost everything out there.
The Syrian military, in addition, has been decimated by defections, shortages, and embargoes, as well as the five-year civil war that it’s been fighting against the Islamic State group and various other factions allied against the government of Bashar Assad.
All of which leads to one question: If this is what the beleaguered Syrian armed forces can do with a plane whose design dates back to the Eisenhower administration, what exactly is our excuse?
