Speaking Saturday evening with Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani called for creating “detention centers” to house illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes.
“We should develop detention centers for them. They shouldn’t be catch-and-release, they shouldn’t go to jail for five years for assault or attempted murder or selling drugs and then go back out on the street,” he said.
“They should go into a detention center,” he continued. “They should be held, and then we should exert all the pressure that we have, which is enormous, by the way, to deport them to the countries where they’re supposed to go to.”

The idea has merit.

During a congressional hearing last year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Sarah Saldana admitted that her agency had released 19,723 convicted illegal immigrants the year prior, as reported by Fox News.
“These are people that were here illegally, got caught committing a crime, were convicted of that crime and instead of deporting them, they were just released back out in the United States of America,” House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz noted during the hearing.
Moreover, according to the Center for Immigration Studies, of those nearly 20,000 illegals, 208 had been convicted of murder, 900 of sex crimes and 12,307 of drunk driving.
These were very bad people, and critics have long argued that reprobates such as these should not be permitted to remain in the U.S. after being convicted of crimes — if for no other reason than the fact that their predilection for lawlessness makes it likely that they will go on to commit additional transgressions.

Judging by Giuliani’s statement Saturday, he agreed. Perhaps President Donald Trump will agree as well.
