During a routine police stop, officers discovered a man who was acting strange at a local Walmart, and when they investigated they found something so terrible the man is now facing felony charges.
In Clovis, California, police stopped Cody High, 24, who was on his bike behind a Walmart store about 8 a.m. The officers began talking to High, who at first gave a fake name.
They quickly learned his true identity and with that learned that he was on felony probation for drug violations.
Police noticed that High was carrying a backpack, when officers asked to see what was in it, they found something shocking. Inside the backpack was an adult cat. It’s mouth, and legs were tightly bound with electrical tape and the poor creature was near death.
The tabby cat was seized by officers and the tape was removed, allowing the cat to breathe again. The animal was then transferred to an emergency vet and, thankfully, was expected to make a full recovery.
According to the veterinarian, had the police officer not intervened, the cat would definitely have died.
“We are happy to report that the cat is doing well and still under the care of a veterinarian in Clovis. Animal Services is being diligent and still attempting to contact the owner of the cat using the information on the microchip,” a Clovis Police Department Facebook post reported.
High was detained in Fresno County Jail, where he was charged with animal cruelty, providing false identification to an officer, narcotics paraphernalia possession and probation violation.
Stories about cruelty to animals always rouse anger — as they should. According to the FBI, animal abuse is prosecuted the same way that murders are because hurting animals is considered “a crime against society.” This is because those who commit animal abuse are more likely to participate in violent acts against others later in life.
This man should be punished to the full extent of the law.
