Common Core is replacing common sense. Not long ago, a frustrated parent demonstrated that fact by writing a scathing message to a teacher. That note was written on a math assignment which demanded that students use a complicated, confusing method to solve basic problems. Now the picture is going viral.

“Don’t feel bad. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in electronics engineering which included extensive study in differential equations and other high-math applications,” wrote the unnamed parent.

You might think that those qualifications would make it easier to grasp Common Core. However, the engineer stated that this wasn’t the case.

“Even I cannot explain the Common Core mathematics approach, nor get the answer correct,” he wrote.

The parent explained that the frustration wasn’t just about the math problem, but the larger flaw with Common Core.

“In the real world, simplification is valued over complication.”

“The answer is solved in under five seconds…. The process used is ridiculous and would result in termination if used,” finished the frustrated parent.

In other words, not only would the Common Core approach to math be useless in the real world, but it could even get somebody fired!

Competitive careers such as engineering, medicine, or computer science do not have room for half-baked ideas and flawed methods. Those fields demand that a solution works in practice, not just in theory.

That point is extremely important. After all, the entire point of school is to prepare young students to enter the real world. If a teaching method does not actually prepare people for reality, then it has failed.
