The number of illegal immigrant children crossing the U.S. southern border appears poised to hit a new record high this year, with nearly 20,000 having already been apprehended this year alone trying to enter the United States.
“They increased in the first five months of FY2016,” a report published by the Congressional Research Service this week read, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
the report added that “perceptions about U.S. immigration policies” no doubt contributed to this spike, though it also laid the blame on the “poor security and socioeconomic conditions” in countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras — as well as these countries’ governments refusal to basically take care of their kids.

“The countries have very few programs to reintegrate the children into society, ensure their safety from domestic abuse or societal violence, keep them in school, or help them find jobs,” the report claimed. “Without any of those conditions assured, many children are likely to try to migrate again.”

Yet U.S. assistance to Central America is slated to total almost $750 million this year, meaning such nations are surely not lacking in the resources needed not only to secure their own borders properly, but also to keep their kids healthy and educated.

Why then do so many kids and adults alike keep trying to flee? Perhaps because of the insane corruption in their respective nations’ governments, which seemingly care more about empowering violent drug cartels than they do about protecting their people?

Regardless of the reason, one thing remains clear — we must take a proactive approach to this problem by building a wall and securing our border.
America needs a president like Donald Trump who is willing to do exactly that.
