It’s Friday. After a long week of work (or, if you’re a Bernie Sanders supporter, a long week of smoking pot in the bedroom you grew up in and telling your mom that you swear you’ll look for a job next week), you deserve something awesome.
And while a Bernie Sanders supporter might not think so, there’s nothing quite as awesome as an American Boeing AH-64 Apache taking out some Taliban fighters in Afghanistan with extreme prejudice.
This video, from Military.com, is an oldie but a goodie. It’s from back from the halcyon days of July, 2012, when there was still a brief glimmer of hope that we might be saved from another four years of Barack Obama. (Of course, we then had to deal with the specter of Mitt Romney for four years, but hey … )
“Coming left, coming left, you coming left?” one of the men could be heard saying.
“Coming left,” another voice confirmed.
“Right, we clear?” the first voice said.
After a little while longer, they finally lock on to their target — which seemed to be a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer beside a building — and engaged.
A quick flash, and a little over a second later … boom. Then, just for good measure, a hail of fire from the attack helicopter’s gun, just to make sure that the job was finished in the correct manner.
“We’re doing what we do,” one of the soldiers can be heard saying. Indeed they were!
Poets have always waxed floridly about the beauty of birds or butterflies in flight. However, I’m not quite one of those Wallace Stevens sorts.
To me, the beauty of a finely-crafted American attack helicopter, floating gracefully above a coven of perfervid Taliban extremists, ready to take them out with Western technology and ordnance — that’s true beauty in action.
Happy Friday, everyone!
